RSF's 2026 World Press Freedom Index, released Sunday on World Press Freedom Day, found press freedom at its worst level in a quarter century. More than 220 journalists killed in Gaza by the Israeli military since October 2023 — making the IDF the largest killer of journalists in the world. RSF cites Trump turning hostility toward the press into "a systematic policy."

Eighteen people have now died in ICE custody in just over four months of 2026. The deaths are being filed individually as local stories rather than aggregated into the pattern they form. A federal detention system killing a person on average every six days is not, on the face of it, local news.
